BRITTLE
HOOVES
Is
a condition where the hoof-wall and sole is comparatively thin and
the rate of growth is abnormally slow. Hoof quality is weak and brittle.
HEALTHY HOOF GROWTH
The
coronet is responsible for the production of fibroblasts which then forms
horny tissue. This normally grows at rate of 6-10mm a month. It takes around
12 months to reach the toe. Variations of diet and general condition cause
horizontal rings to develop.
25%-33% of the hoof wall is water and optimum moisture content is essential
for hoof quality.
Causes:
These
may include:
-
Inadequate access to
‘weeds or rough pasture’
-
A diet low in biotin
-
Inadequate levels of
energy, protein, mineral and vitamin levels.
-
Incorrectly
proportioned calcium and phosphorous levels.
-
Incorrect moisture
levels. Where horn is too dry it becomes brittle and if too moist soft
and crumbly.
Treatment:
-
A balance has to be
established between absorption and evaporation of moisture from
hoof surface and the underlying tissues.
-
In dry weather
gentle washing of the feet and apply plant-based
oil to the whole surface.
-
Do not apply any product that seals the
surface like stockholm tar or neatsfoot oil which does not allow the
movement of water in and out of hoof.
-
Keep the horse in work
avoiding road seal and mud.
-
Research
shows that a daily dose of biotin, a member of the vitamin B complex,
over 5-6 months will assist horse with chronic hoof problems.
-
Sufficient levels of
methionine is necessary for horn development
Alternative Preventative
and Herbal Treatment.
-
Massage the coronet
band with Hira Coronet Cream containing vitamin E, Evening Primrose and
Echinacea which will stimulate the production of fibroblasts
-
Conditioning Feed Boost
will provide the horse with plant based biotin concentrates, methionine
and herbal mixes which address not only the above but also the complete
metabolism of food.
-
Increase blood flow to
laminae and hoof will improve growth rates. Herbs that can help with
this are rosemary, gingko, ashwaganda,garlic
